“This series is a MUST see for anyone that is considering a Concealed Carry lifestyle and a great resource, inspiration, and eye opener for those, like myself; that have been Carrying Concealed for many years.” – R. Walker
“I am a 60 year old veteran… I’ve been around shooting and handguns for many years… but really got a shock when I purchased this program and started watching it. I didn’t think of 10% of the issues I needed to deal with if I was going to carry a handgun safely and effectively… but now I’m confident EVERY morning when I slide my gun into the holster.” – A. Hunt
Dear fellow NRA Member,
My name is Patrick Kilchermann, founder of the Concealed Carry University. When I joined the NRA at the ripe old age of 18, I never imagined that I would, many years later, have my work featured in The American Rifleman. This is an incredible step in the journey I’ve been on to push for a revolution in the way Concealed Carry is prepared for by America’s 12 Million privately armed Guardians.
And yet, after spending a number of years in the firearms industry and helping to grow one of the nation’s premiere gun associations, here I am. Time is short; I don’t want you to miss out on the ‘scholarship’ I’m offering to the first 3,000 takers detailed above, so I’ll get right to it:
There exists a ‘Concealed Carry Epidemic’ out there, all stemming from faulty Concealed Carry Education and Training.
Sure, there has always been a slew of terrible advice passed from gun club to gun club (for example, the go-to-prison-free-card classic, “if you shoot someone and they fall on your front step… you’d better drag him back in!”), but the depth to which our expectations have been corrupted and shattered for what a violent attack will be like and therefore how we should prepare ourselves for a violent attack is so extreme these days that many people are nowhere near as prepared to defend themselves as they think they are.
Little do they know, but they’ve set themselves up for physical and legal failure.
The darkest and most obvious evidence for this? Good guys are dying (both police and private citizens), or they’re going to prison.
The reason is simple: Within mainstream concealed carry education and training, there exists a series of commonly held myths, mistakes, and points of mis-education that have led to warped expectation in the minds of America’s Guardians. And yet: Because we can only train for and prepare against what we expect, any number of these myths or mistakes that we allow into our concealed carry lifestyles sends our true preparedness and effectiveness levels spiraling downward.
While I absolutely believe the average NRA member diligent enough to read my article in American Rifleman and come to read these words now is many cuts above “average Joe Permit holder” – I have educated and trained enough advanced individuals to know that even 30-year CPL veterans have usually allowed some of this detrimental information creep into their beliefs and habits.
Our duty, then, must be to seek out, identify, and eliminate any of these myths or mistakes from our Foundational Self-Defense Beliefs, replacing them with fact and truth.
That’s the goal of the program that you see above: Groundbreaking Self-Defense.
To help you check yourself against what I’ve determined are the top 27 myths and mistakes made today by folks who carry concealed. We answer questions such as:
> What does a violent attack actually look like?
> What does that mean for what sort of handgun I should carry?
> How should that affect the skills I need to have ingrained into my muscle memory long beforehand?
> What knowledge of criminals and threats must I have beforehand to help me avoid violence?
However, this production goes even deeper than that, by organizing all of our preparation in a healthy, balanced perspective, according to one of our Concealed Carry University founding principals: The 3 Pillars of Effective Self-Defense.
Our 3 Pillar Concept separates Effective Self-Defense preparation into three different (but equally important) categories: Mindset, Training, and Gear.
Your ‘gear’ are the physical tools you use to amplify your ability to defend yourself. A gun and its supporting equipment: holster, magazine, perhaps a knife.. perhaps a flashlight…
Your ‘training’ represents your physical skills and abilities. Your draw-stroke… your ability to move and gain distance during an attack while keeping control of your handgun… your ability to hit a moving target while you yourself are moving… etc, etc. (Note that one key reality that we must all kneel to in regards to our physical skills and abilities is understanding and preparing for the effects of stress and adrenaline will have on our bodies. We will discuss this a lot more within Groundbreaking Self-Defense but for now, it’s enough to recognize that one of the reasons the ‘Concealed Carry Epidemic’ is so destructive, is because much of modern training will go flying out the window during a violent attack. Statistics show that even many qualified police officers’ handgun accuracy in an attack is on par with the target accuracy of someone who has never fired a handgun before).
The first pillar, your Mindset, is the most overlooked and brushed aside aspect of preparation by modern Concealed Carry Education and Training. Most people have forgotten the fact that the human mind is not only the most powerful tool we’ll ever have available to us, but is – really – the enabling component of any sort of self-defense. The gun in our belts – and even our bodies themselves – are only tools for our Minds to use.
That is precisely what makes overlooking this First Pillar such a mistake: because even a well-trained, well-equipped individual stands a good chance of crumbling or freezing under the pressure of a violent attack – if they have not invested in and developed their Mindset. (I refer to this as their Warrior Mindset – or Guardian Mindset).
A 3 Pillar Core Concept: Weakness and Vulnerability
One of the most important take-aways of the 3 Pillar concept is that we’re only as strong and prepared as the WEAKEST of our 3 Pillars. Therefore, we must seek to become well-rounded and well-educated and well-trained in all 3 pillars. Guiding you toward developing your own 3 pillars is the goal of our flagship curriculum piece: the 7 DVD Armed American’s Complete Guide to Effective Self-Defense.
A Make or Break Reality Regarding Your 3 Pillars
The other critical takeaway to this ‘3 Pillar’ concept is that in order to guarantee that your education and training in any of these 3 areas (mindset, training, and gear) is going to benefit you during an attack rather than hindering you, your education must be constructed atop a rock-solid foundation of self-defense belief.
If your Foundational self-defense beliefs are flawed or contain cracks (myths, mistakes) – your 3 pillars can only become so tall before they come crashing down. For one example: few people understand that the average self-defense incident involving a private citizen lasts only 3 seconds. That’s 3 seconds from the time an attack is initiated to the conclusion of the incident. By the end of 3 seconds, either you will have successfully defended yourself, or you’ll become a victim. But unfortunately, because of the faulty expectation most armed citizens have of “I’ll see him coming and will have time to prepare”, virtually ALL of that individual’s preparation and training will be conducted with handgun already drawn – OR with handgun holstered and concealed (good), but with eyes focused on an already identified target.
Clearly the training facilities many of us have access to prohibit getting too dynamic, but if this is the only way we ever practice with our handguns, we’ve essentially become very good at preparing for a violent situation that we are almost – statistically – guaranteed to never face.
And, what happens when we DO find ourselves in a likely attack? One where we are ambushed by an attacker who has already closed distance and has begun to inflict injury? In many cases, we freeze, or we draw without good retention strategy, and our guns end up being used against us…
For another, quicker example: if our only tools are hammers, then every problem looks like a nail. This is very true with regards to carrying a handgun concealed. When we’re confronted by an imminently violent individual, our instinct is usually to prepare for a fight. But the reality is that not all potentially violent individuals are created equal. There are a number of them who can successfully be deescalated and, for those, I believe we have a moral obligation to do so. However, this presents a dilemma: if we HESITATE against someone who absolutely means to do us harm, then we are only lessening the chances of successfully defending ourselves. However, some threats are not actively seeking a fight, but are instead “playing” a primal “game” of dominance. Against these individuals, your vocal and body-language response is going to either SPARK a fight (that you then have to deal with) or DEFUSE the situation entirely – no violence necessary.
A very wise man once said: the best gunfight is the one you avoid…. Well, without the proper education, we stand a good chance of being sucked into dominance games by these specific types of threats. Why is this an issue? Because later in court, even after you’ve successfully defended yourself from someone who truly was about to kill you, it will look to a jury that your situation “took two to tango”, and you’ll end up in a disastrously similar position George Zimmerman after his lethal force incident. The truth is that we privately armed Americans are going to be held to a VERY high standard after the fact – which means learning deescalation tactics AHEAD of time is, in some ways, just as important as learning to use our handguns.
These are just a couple examples of how our ‘big picture’ approach here at Concealed Carry University differs from the “nuts and bolts” used by much of modern Concealed Carry Education. Patching up these types of cracks in your Foundational Self-Defense Beliefs is the goal of Groundbreaking Self-Defense: To reset your expectations so that you can push forward and construct your 3 Pillars confidently – ultimately leading a concealed carry lifestyle that stands firmly in the top percentile of America’s Effectively Armed.
At Concealed Carry University, we have sparked a revolution in the way private citizens prepare themselves, and I heartily welcome you to accept this scholarship, and experience our brand of education and training and thought. Through this program, Groundbreaking Self-Defense, you will benefit from our new perspective on self-defense preparation, and it is my hope that it encourages you to try our other curriculum pieces – namely – the Complete Concealed Carry Guide to Effective Self-Defense.
Thank you so much for your time and attention, and trust.
